Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge Osprey

On a recent trip to Hagerman NWR, I entered the refuge just as the sun was peaking over the horizon. I drove to one area and saw an Osprey in a tree. I waited for about 30 minutes. The skies became very cloudy, then the rain started. I packed up my gear and was ready to make the hour and a half drive back to my house.

Thankfully, I decided to just drive around the refuge and see the sights. Within 20 minutes, the storm passed through and the clouds started to break up. I drove back to where I had spotted the Osprey. I grabbed my camera and tripod and started walking towards the raptor. I was very excited because the bird was to the west of a river and the sun was rising and lighting it up beautifully.

Just as I set up my camera and tripod, the Osprey took off and started flying away. My heart skipped a beat as I saw it turn around and start flying back towards me. I kept thinking, “Please come back to the tree. Please come back to the tree!”

I was lucky and this gorgeous bird did exactly that. The album below is the series of photos I took as the Osprey landed back on its perch.
