Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis)
In February of 2020, I put up two Eastern Bluebird boxes in a field within a 10 minute walk from our home. It was my hope that I would be able to set up my camera and catch these birds as they went through a full nesting cycle.
Unfortunately, within a week, vandals had ripped the nesting boxes from the ground and had thrown them into some trees. I was furious!
Undaunted, I decided to put one of the nesting boxes in our front yard. In order to get a nice blurry background, I needed some distance from the nesting box to the neighbor’s bushes. I scoped out an area, put up the nesting box and crossed my fingers.
Within an hour, my wife and daughterinlaw told me that they thought they saw bluebirds checking out the box.
When I first discovered the vandalized nest boxes, I was angry and disheartened. But, it ended up working out for the best. I spent many mornings sipping coffee and watching the Eastern Bluebirds raise two separate families.
