Capturing the beauty of nature is my passion

Black Skimmer (Rynchops niger)

The Black Skimmer is unique in that its lower bill is longer than the upper. Feeding by touch, it opens its mouth and flies with its lower mandible dragging in the water. When it feels a fish touch its bill, it quickly snaps up the prey.

I had the extreme pleasure of photographing nesting Black Skimmers on the beaches of the Florida Panhandle. The nesting site was adjacent to a small roadway, so I was able to just sit in my car and photograph these birds without disturbing them. In fact, this causeway attracts numerous joggers and the birds are so used to the human traffic, they don't react as the joggers quickly run past the nesting sites.
