Capturing the beauty of nature is my passion

Ramona Grasslands - California

I decided to take an impromptu trip to the San Diego area to visit the Ramona Grasslands. My goal was to take photos of a raptor I had never seen before, the largest of North American hawks - Ferruginous Hawk.

I landed in San Diego airport to cloudy skies and constant rain. I climbed in to the rental car and headed towards the Ramona Grasslands.

For the first hour or so, it was cloudy, raining and cold. Thankfully, in anticipation of cold weather, I wore a leather coat, gloves and skull cap.

The clouds cleared, a rainbow appeared and I prepared myself. Suddenly, from the East I saw a bird flying towards me. I readied my camera and started to shoot. To my excitement, this Ferruginous Hawk flew directly towards me then right over my head. My heart was pounding with excitement.

A few minutes later, I heard the howl of coyotes. I drove a couple hundred yards further down the road and spotted a pair of coyotes as they climbed out of the copse of rocks to dry out.
